  1. Project Overview

Kenya

The project commenced with the provision of computer hardware and the establishment of a computer laboratory as the foundation of our volunteer service. Leveraging the academic strengths of National Tsing Hua University in information technology and natural sciences, we aspire to empower the local community through both hardware and software support. Our long-term objective is to enhance computer accessibility, thereby reducing the digital divide and connecting local children and residents with the wider global community.

In 2025, the advance team, due to its smaller size, was able to pilot a variety of initiatives aimed at identifying services better suited to local needs. The project also extended the scope of ICT education beyond the classroom by collaborating with non-profit organizations in informal settlements. In doing so, we sought to ensure that digital literacy benefits not only students but also a wider range of community members in their everyday lives.

Mozambique

With the longstanding support of the Tzu Chi Foundation, Mozambique already possesses well-developed physical infrastructure. However, the local education center remains constrained by the absence of a structured ICT education system and adequately trained instructors, limiting the effective use of available computer resources.Drawing on service experiences in Kenya, Tanzania, and Eswatini, and informed by local observations, we aim to adapt and introduce a sustainable ICT education system tailored to the Mozambique context in order to strengthen the digital competencies of both teachers and students.

Prior to the deployment of a full volunteer team, an advance team composed of experienced members was dispatched to conduct an in depth situational assessment. The team implemented pilot ICT lessons in partner schools, observed student learning outcomes, and carried out school visits to assess infrastructure, hardware and software resources, teaching capacity, and student readiness. The findings were consolidated into a comprehensive report, providing valuable insights to guide future volunteer teams in delivering services that are both effective and contextually appropriate.
