Project Overview

The ShiNepal Volunteer group has now entered its 13th year of service. From July 13 to August 2 this year, the team traveled to Nepal for a three-week service program. Most partner institutions were schools in remote mountain areas and orphanages. These regions generally face challenges such as limited access to medical resources and insufficient health awareness, making it difficult for residents to receive basic healthcare and education in their daily lives. To address these urgent needs, the team integrated medical consultations with health education initiatives. The team hoped that their efforts would not only bring short-term improvements but also generate long-term positive impacts within the local communities.

Service outcome

During the three weeks of service, the team conducted health education classes, teaching proper toothbrushing and handwashing techniques to help children develop good hygiene habits, reduce the risk of cavities, and prevent infectious diseases. In addition, lessons on menstruation and gender equality were introduced to help students break away from misconceptions and prejudices, thereby fostering a more respectful and inclusive atmosphere. The team also placed great importance on the delivery of essential medical knowledge. Courses covered CPR, burn treatment, and patient transport, enabling children to learn practical self-help and first-aid skills through role-play and simulations. Furthermore, the accompanying physicians provided diagnostic services, including medication distribution, disease screening, and measurements of height, weight, and vision. Partnering with the ASUS Foundation, the team also introduced resources such as refurbished computers and portable ultrasound devices, further promoting the spread of health education and improving the overall health standards of local residents.

Future Prospects

In terms of curriculum design, we plan to create more tailored programs in the future—for instance, using games and visual aids to enhance children’s understanding, while developing specialized lessons on first aid and chronic disease management for adults. At the same time, new courses on skincare and eye health will be added to address common local health concerns. In terms of manpower and resources, we will involve local volunteers to assist with language and cultural communication. In the long run, our goal is to cultivate local health educators and community health volunteers, enabling the community to independently inherit and manage health knowledge. This will gradually transform the role of international volunteer teams from direct providers of service to companions and supporters. Through such a model, the local community will be able to establish its own sustainable health system, ensuring that the service outcomes are effectively implemented and continuously carried forward.
