Project Introduction
With the mission of "Sustainable Volunteer Service" and the core belief of "Big Hands Holding Little Hands," National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University
Indian International volunteer Jullay group has built a deep cross-national friendship with Jamyang School that has lasted for 14 years.
From July 5th to July 27th, 2024, Jullay 14 conducted service at Jamyang School in Ladakh. We introduced five diverse courses covering the fields of digital education, health education, humanistic care, and environmental protection. Also, we continued our longstanding student sponsorship program and conducted field interviews with the school's teachers, students, and alumni. Through these efforts, we aim to provide students with more resources and support in their lives.
Service Benefits
This year's service achievements include five major thematic courses: Digital Education (Coding Ocean and Arduino), Menstruation Awareness, Hometown Issues, and Recycled Art. To address the school's needs for a library and custom school uniforms, we initiated sub-projects for fundraising and book donations, raising $885 and collecting 419 English books. The student sponsorship program also raised $3,600 this year. Additionally, the Jullay team donated 8 cameras, 7 sets of Coding Ocean board games, and partnered with the ASUS Foundation to donate 23 refurbished computers to enhance the school's equipment.
During our service, we conducted field research and interviews focusing on course instruction and support programs. The school also organized various exchange activities, such as picnic day, Ladakh Culture Day, a two-day trip to Nubra Valley, and visits to alternative schools like HIAL and SECMOL. We also hosted a Taiwan Day for cultural exchange, allowing us to deeply experience local culture, broaden our perspectives, and share Taiwanese traditions with the students.
Future Prospects
In terms of courses, Jullay 14 has taken the first step in our alumni empowerment program by inviting graduates to return to the school to assist with certain courses as teaching assistants, helping with course guidance and translation. We found this approach to be effective and plan to continue this program, gradually involving alumni in the design and implementation of Jullay’s courses.
As part of the Service 2.0 initiative, we conducted an inventory of the computers in the computer lab and found that nearly all of them are functioning properly. This suggests that online courses are feasible. Moving forward, we will begin planning online courses.
Regarding the sponsorship program, the Jullay group will continue to focus on raising educational funds for students, while actively seeking partnerships with foundations. Our long-term goal is to help Jamyang School establish and independently manage a sustainable sponsorship model. This will enable Jullay to develop a stable collaboration and fundraising process with the school.
In order to expand the influence of our services, we also visited two new locations this year and learned that Ladakh Likir Monastery School has computer needs and Ladakh Rigjung Public School Leh Branch has needs for curriculum activities.
