Project Introduction

NTHU Malayia volunteering group was established in 2012. We are the one of few international volunteering groups in Taiwan which focuses on the preservation overseas culture and history. We use fieldwork as our method, humanistic solicitude as our foundation, digital technology as our tool, and cultural and historical preservation as our goal. We travel to the small towns in Malaysia every year to document and preserve the local memories.

On the coordination with the local organization " Imagine Pekan Nanas", this is the second year we visit to Pekan Nanas located in southern Malaysia. Our work revolved around four major themes: "New Village, Bazaar, Religion, and Singapore”, writing the cultural memories of Pekan Nanas and filming four documentaries. In addition, we have collaborated with local schools such as Yu-Ming Elementary School, Pontian Pei Chun High School, and Southern University College, using our foreign identity to provoke the residents raising awareness about preserving the cultural heritage of their hometown

Service Benefits

  1. Writing 4 in-depth articles regarding Pekan Nanas, 22 character-featured articles, and 13 local food introductions, totaling over 70,000 Chinese characters.
  2. Drawing the first life-guide map for Pekan Nanas.
  3. Filming 4 documentaries featuring the local figures.
  4. Holding the first "Local Field Work Training Camp" for the community to inspire the local adolescents, with 22 high school students participating.
  5. Designing a touring guide route in Pekan Nanas and conducting two guided tours “In Search of the Golden Past Time” for introducing the local history, with a total of 21 participants.
  6. Hosting a mobile phone photography camp in the local elementary school, with 29 students participating.
  7. Holding a sharing session with our fieldworks and a documentary screening in the local elementary school, with approximately 550 attendees.
  8. Sharing our field works and experiences at Southern University College, with 21 teachers and students attending.
  9. Hosting an exhibition, “Strolling around the New Village, Pekan Nanas”, about our fieldwork accomplishments and experiences, with about 120 people in attendance.
  10. Publishing the second issue of the local magazine "People in Pekan Nanas" which describes the rise and fall of the pineapple industry in past Pekan Nanas.

Future Prospects

After three weeks service in Malaysia, we have accomplished distinguished achievements and established profound friendships with numerous residents, youth, and elders. During this time, we shared our cultures and life experiences, leading to a deeper understanding on both sides. Our efforts have connected the people of Taiwan and Malaysia through grass-roots exchange. Next year, we will return to Pekan Nanas to uncover more local stories and personalities, based on the experience of the past two years. In the future, the NTHU Malaysia Volunteer Group will continue its mission of cultural preservation in Malaysia, using cultural exchange to make friendship between Taiwan and Malaysia more and more closer.
